He didn't arrive.
Why did he say he would be there if he wasn't going to be there? He promised he'd be there.
He promised.
I knew he wouldn't be interested. I wish he'd just said he wasn't. Why was he so cruel?
He promised to teach me.
All the other guys I've met remind me of Yuuji. Crude, abrasive. That's why I've never been interested; who could be interested in someone so unlikeable? He seemed so different, though. He cares about his drawings, I can see it. He seemed willing to share that world with me.
Seemed.
He promised. Why did he lie to me?
I even went and bought a sketch book like his. I thought it would make him happy.
He didn't even bother to leave a note... he just... left.
And I'd reminded him this morning.
He promised he'd be there, and that he wouldn't forget.
Hayasaka-san was nice to me... she let me stay in the shop. But it got too much, being there with him not there. I could see she was amused.
I hope she gives him my cell number.
Oh, who are you kidding, Yuki-kun. You're plain, ugly. No one would ever be interested in you. Piro-sensei said he'd teach you, but clearly you weren't nice enough for him.
He broke his promise. Why do people do things like that? Was he just playing with me?
*bring* *bring* *bring*
I startle out of my black thoughts, and reach for my phone. I don't recognise the number.
"^H... hello?^"
"Er... ^Hello, my name is Piro, I'm looking for ... Sonoda Yuki?^"
"^Piro Sensei?^"
"^Sonoda-san? I'm so sorry! I was in town and I missed the final train back!^"
"^I waited until eight, but you never came back.^"
"^I'm sorry! I totally forgot about the lesson.^"
"^You forgot? But Sensei, I reminded you about it this morning! How could you just forget?^"
"^I'm sorry, Sonoda-san...^"
"^You really don't want to teach me, do you?^"
A pause. I cringe, and take a deep breath.
"^I'll stop bothering you. You don't need to worry about me any more.^"
"^No, no! Please, it was my fault, it's not that I don't want to teach you. How... how about we reschedule for tomorrow?^"
Startled, I pause. He wants to reschedule?
"^Hmm? Are you sure? I don't want to force you to...^"
He interrupts : "^No, please, I feel terrible about what I've put you through. I want to make it up to you.^"
"^You mean you'll be there this time? Promise?^"
"^I promise. 7 pm?^"
"^Tomorrow at seven? Okay, I'll be there.^"
A pause. I feel nervous, and curious. Why did he forget me? Why did he break his promise to me? He seems apologetic. Is he still playing?
I screw up some courage, pulling my knees up to my chest. Please don't let him hang up on me.
"^So... what else is up?^"
He seems off-guard.
"^Eh... me? Uh...nothing. There's nothing going on here. Oh, wait, there's someone at the door.^"
He's going to hang up on me.
"^Sonoda-san, I'm afraid I have to go... I have some stuff I need to take care of. I'll see you at 7pm tomorrow night, okay?^"
I sigh, slumping forward.
"^Thank you, sensei. I'll see you at 7. Good night.^"
He hangs up. I sit still for a while, and then I start to shiver. The cellphone falls onto my bed, and I stare at it blankly for a while.
He hung up... I guess he just sees me as a silly girl. Plain. Worthless.
Closing my eyes, I fight back the urge to curl up and cry. I sit, still, for a while, and then pick up my phone again. I dial the number.
"^Asako? Are you alone?^"
"^Yuki-chan! What's wrong? You sound miserable!^"
"^I feel terrible. And I need someone to talk to, and you're one of my best friends and Mami would probably just laugh at me...^"
The tears start. Dimly, I can hear Asako through the sobs.
